Ride Around The Hills

In November 2003 Les Niewiara was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In that same year there were just over 7,000 other people who also got the same news. By the end of this year, nearly all of those people will have died and there will be fewer than 200 left. Unfortunately, most people have never heard of pancreatic cancer and the battle that those who are diagnosed face.

One of the main reasons that these statistics are not higher up the political, medical and charity agenda is that there are just not enough  survivors to make a loud enough noise about what he considers to be an appalling international scandal. As he is currently one of the lucky survivors, he feels it is important to try and raise the volume about this issue, however, he is going to need the voices of many of you who have no direct link to pancreatic cancer to help create a critical mass of people who can work together to bring about a change to the current situation.

The vehicle he has chosen to help you get involved and to help raise the volume is Bike to the Future 2008 - 'Ride around the World'. It is a series of linked events that will be taking place in the summer of 2008 throughout the World, and in which he is hoping to engage as many people as possible with a common aim.

In May 2007, Rob Lewis, an Australian Ironman triathlete discovered why he was finding it harder and harder to compete.

He had a pre-cancerous tumour in his pancreas. By the time the tumour was removed he could no longer ride a bike let alone compete in a triathlon. He is also one of the lucky few.

A mutual friend introduced Rob to Les' idea of the Ride Around the World, and so Rob decided to join in and organise the Adelaide "Ride Around the Hills" as part of this event. After getting together with the Cancer Council, it was decided to expand the event to include Prostate Cancer as well, and the event has now become the
Guardian Insurance Father's Day Classic .

So, if you have got nothing planned for 7th September 2008, and want to mix a really good training ride with helping out a charity, then come and join us!
